Metaphor

METAPHOR

A metaphor is when you compare two unlike things to one another. The best writers use this form of writing to entertain their target audience and expand their imaginations. There are different types of metaphors such as similes, personification, anthropomorphism, hyperbole, and analogy. Below is an example & definition of a simile :

Source : Merriam Webster's Dictionary

Main Entry: sim·i·le Pronunciation: \ˈsi-mə-(ˌ)lē\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Latin, comparison, from neuter of similis Date: 14th century : a figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as (as in cheeks like roses) — compare metaphor

Personification is when you give human qualities to an object. For example in the movie Cars, the characters were very relatable except for one small detail- they were cars. This is illustrated in the following image:

Anthropomorphism is a rare use of writing that only a few authors have mastered. Its an interpretation of what is not human or personal in terms of human or personal characteristics. Here's a perfect example:

Hyperbole is an extravagant exaggeration, for example: I am so hungry i could eat a horse. Below is another example, this image is stating that if you do wrong you will be executed and we all know that's not true.

Last, but certainly not least is analogy. This example means: inference that if two or more things agree with one another in some respects they will probably agree in others.

These forms of writing are all over the work of Robert Herrick, Dylan Thomas, and Emily Dickinson. Robert Herrick wrote A Meditation for his Mistress which is him comparing his mistress to a number of things. My favorite line was in stanza number 2 when he says:

"You are a lovely July-flower, Yet one rude wind or ruffling shower"

This is a form of a metaphor in which he states how perfect she can be, but at the same time he says she can be not so perfect at times.
