CHOICES

CHOICES

The choices we make in our life time determine how we are as individuals. In The Road Not Taken- by Robert Frost he describes how he took the second road (the road not everyone takes) and had to live with his decision. But after all these years he still wonders what might have been if he took the first one. In Dead End- by the same author the main character Maria is faced with the daily struggle teenagers go through. But with a good head on her shoulders she was able to live above the influence and carry on life helping her brother and sister & with her studies.

The hardest thing about making choices is having to live with the "what if..." in your head. Believe it or not we make choices more often than you think. Starting with what you wear every morning, what you eat, who you hang out with, ect. No matter how much influence people may try to have upon you, its all up to you.

In the poem, the author shows a sign of remorse for not choosing the road every one else took. He wonders what could have been of his life if he would have. But im a strong believer of everything happens for a reason, so that just shows how strong of a person you really are to make a hard decision and live with it. His sorrows are illustrated in the last stanza "I shall be telling this with a sigh", meaning he regrets it or will regret it n the future.

Maria's story was similar in how she made the choice not to smoke and go all the way with Frankie or hang out with the easy girls. The promise she made her mom was more important, which shows she had values. The values our parents pass on to us have a lot to do with the choices we make. Although we might not notice it we are very similar to them and throughout the years of experience we realize all they want is for us is not to make the poor choices they've made. In this story envy was portrayed in many ways. The girls were envious of the fact that one of the most good looking guys in school were attracted to a plain girl like Maria. Loneliness was portrayed in this story as well. She missed her mother very much and so she covered that with thoughts about this boy. Throughout this story Maria is faced with a number of situations and opportunities in which she could have easily given into, but she did not. The promise of continuing with her studies to her mom was a big deal to her.

"Logic suggests that having options allows people to select precisely what makes them happiest. But as, studies show, abundant choice often makes for misery".

This quote is from the Tyranny of choice, and its basically saying that once you are given options you are given a chance to be happy or to at least realize what makes you happy. Making choices determines how strong you are, and it challenges your character. The most important people in this world make the biggest choices, such as; the government. Followed by our leaders in business and education leaders. These people have the ability to make decisions that we cant. The crazy thing is that choices are given to help us determine what makes us happy. But when given too many choices we freak out with the idea of not choosing the right one. We over think it to the point that we are no longer searching for happiness. A lot of people ignore the fact that these choices are there to make our lives easier, but as humans with uncontrollable emotions we take others' opinions into consideration and we become the "satisfier" or the person that pleases others. Regret takes a big place in decision making. The fear of taking one road and not the other puts us in a contradictory position. Adapting to our choices means settling with what we got. High Expectations often throw us off when making choices. For example, when you decide to do one thing and it doesn't turn out how you expected it things might go for the worst. Disappointment is the down fall of it all.
